What is a face lift surgery?
Face lift (rhytidectomy) is a surgical method that removes sagging and wrinkles due to aging by stretching and hanging. However, in recent years, all attempts related to facial aging have begun to be referred to as facial rejuvenation.
As a person ages, the face skin sags, wrinkles, and various spots and irregularities occur on it due to the effects of years, sun rays, daily stresses and other factors (smoking, alcohol, malnutrition). In an elderly person’s face, forehead lines are prominent, eyebrows are dropped, eyelids are sagged, bags and lines are formed under the eyes, deep lines have formed in the mouth – nose area, the cheek is sagging, the chin contours have disappeared, the neck is oily and skin curtains are formed. The skin lost its vitality, sunspots and other moles appeared on it, it became thinner and wrinkled.
One of the Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery surgeries, facelift surgery is also known as “rhytidectomy”. Sagging and irregularities on the forehead, face and neck skin are removed with facelift surgeries; Excess fat tissue on the cheek and neck is removed, facial fascia and fat tissues are pulled and hung on their anatomical places, facial tissues are reinforced, eyelids are corrected, and other complementary procedures can be performed (such as skin peeling, filling and btx).
Who are the best candidates for this surgery?
Ideal candidates for facelift surgery are those whose face and neck skin have begun to sag, but their skin still has not lost its elasticity and has no other health problems. Generally, this surgery is applied to men and women over the age of 40. However, this type of surgery can be performed in full or limited way at an earlier age due to structural and genetic reasons. During facelift surgery, nose and eyelids aesthetics, forehead correction and eyebrow lift operations can be added to make the face look more beautiful and younger. Injection of fillers (oil, hyaluronic acid, etc.) or peeling (mechanical, chemical, laser) for fine wrinkles and btox for wrinkles.
When you have a problem with facial aging or sagging and are considering surgery, first discuss with yourself what you want and why you want it, and then consult a plastic surgeon.
Tell your doctor one by one about your wishes and expectations and discuss these issues with him. If you smoke, stop 10 days before the surgery. Tell your doctor about your sunbathing and skin care habits, and do not forget to ask what you need to do after the surgery in order for the surgery to give a more permanent result. If necessary, discuss the matter with your doctor several times.
The surgery is performed in hospital conditions, under the supervision of an anesthesiologist, in the operating room. It can be done with general anesthesia or intravenous sedation (with sedative drugs) under local anesthesia. This type of surgery can take 3-10 hours, depending on the technique and what will be done. Additional procedures (nose, eyelid, etc.) can be performed in the same session. Facelift surgery is not scarless. However, these traces are not visible because they are hidden. The scars are hidden in the scalp in the temple area, in front of and behind the ear. If the fat in the under-chin area is removed, a 3-5 mm scar remains under the chin, if the eyelid and forehead stretching are added, additional scars remain on the eyelids and in the scalp on the forehead. However, these scars on the face are mostly inconspicuous and can be hidden.
Early period after surgery usually passes on at ease. There may be a general swelling and bruising, numbness and tightness on the face. Since the facial nerves may be slightly affected by anesthesia during the operation, there may be slight asymmetries on the face. These disappear spontaneously within 3-5 days. A head wrap and cold pads are applied to the cheeks, leaving eyes, nose and mouth open. Silicone pipes called drains can be placed in order to prevent blood accumulation in the tissue. Resists are withdrawn within 2 days at the latest. The bandage is completely removed after 2-3 days. General inspection and dressing change is made. Hair can be washed during this period. If the stitches are not dissolvable, they are removed after 5-7 days.
Return to normal life
It gives good results if it is done according to the surgery technique. Rarely, second corrections may be required. From the 2nd postoperative day, the patient can stand up and do their home work. After a week, the patient can return to work and make up after the swelling disappears. It is recommended to avoid heavy exercises and excessive sunlight for 2 months and to protect against external impacts. The newly given shape of the face and neck skin can last for 5-10 years and sometimes for a lifetime, depending on the person’s structure and environmental conditions.
